Explore the chapel and maypole
Zugspitzplatt is not only home to the highest ski area in Germany, but also the highest chapel in the country, called "Maria Heimsuchung". It was consecrated in 1981 by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. You can reach it in just a few steps from the Sonnalpin. Germany's highest maypole is also erected at an altitude of 2,600 meters every year. This is transported to the Zugspitzplatt by cog railroad, painted at the top and traditionally erected on May 1st.
